Mio found the shell at the edge of the water.

It was pale blue and smooth, but it was not empty. When she held it to her ear, it whispered a name.

“Haruto.”

Mio looked around. Only an elderly woman stood near the seawall, watching the sunset.

The shell whispered again. This time it said, “Come back before the last train.”

Mio walked to the woman and showed her the shell.

The woman’s eyes widened. “My brother said those words to me when we were children,” she said. “I forgot his voice.”

Mio gave her the shell. The woman held it carefully, as if it were a warm bird.

A small smile crossed her face.

“He always ran too fast,” she said. “I always told him to wait.”

The sea became gold in the evening light. The shell was silent now, but the woman did not seem sad.

She returned it to Mio.

“Some memories do not need to stay,” she said. “They only need to visit.”

Mio put the shell in her pocket. As she walked home, it whispered one more name.

This time, it was hers.
