The Umbrella That Chose a Friend
A yellow umbrella keeps moving toward the person who needs it most.
Nana bought a yellow umbrella because the color looked cheerful on a rainy day.
She did not expect it to be strange.
After school, she opened it outside the station. The umbrella turned to the left by itself.
"Hey," Nana said. "The rain is above me, not over there."
The umbrella pulled gently. Nana followed it through the shopping street.
It stopped in front of a boy from her class. His name was Yuto, and he was standing under a small roof with no umbrella.
"Did you forget yours?" Nana asked.
Yuto looked embarrassed. "I gave it to my little brother this morning."
Before Nana could answer, her yellow umbrella leaned over Yuto and covered him too.
"I think it likes you," Nana said.
"Maybe it just feels sorry for me."
They walked together. Rain made silver lines on the street, and shop lights shone on the wet road.
At the corner, Yuto stopped.
"Thank you," he said. "I was waiting for the rain to stop, but I was also waiting because I did not want to go home alone."
Nana looked at the umbrella. It shook once, as if it was proud.
"Then it chose well," she said.
The next day was sunny. Nana brought the umbrella anyway.
Yuto saw it and smiled.
"Is your umbrella looking for me again?" he asked.
Nana held it between them.
"Maybe," she said. "But today, I think I am choosing too."
